Meet Darryl DeAngelo Terrell
Darryl DeAngelo Terrell is a Brooklyn-based, Detroit-born artist whose dynamic work spans lens-based media, performance, writing, and more. A graduate of Wayne State University (BFA, 2015) and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (MFA, 2017), Darryl’s creative philosophy centers on the concept of F.U.B.U. (This Shit Is For Us*), always aiming to foster broader conversations about blackness and its myriad intersections.
Darryl’s current projects explore afro-surrealism and the liberation of black people from the presence of whiteness, envisioning a utopian “elsewhere” where the black diaspora can experience complete freedom. Simultaneously, Darryl delves into themes of queerness and desire through the persona of Dion, a fat black femme non-binary alter-ego. These themes are expressed through photography, video, activations, sound, and writing, making Darryl’s work a multifaceted exploration of identity and liberation.
